How to program Cox Mini Box remote to TV — easy steps
Quick checklist (what the client needs)
- Cox Mini Box and its remote
- Fresh batteries in the remote
- TV turned on and connected to the Mini Box (HDMI or coax)
- Cox Mini Box powered on and showing a picture
- A stable place to follow on-screen instructions
Method A — Recommended: Use the on-screen Remote Setup
(This is the easiest and most reliable for most Cox boxes.)
- Turn on your TV and the Cox Mini Box.
- On the Cox remote press Home or Menu.
- Go to Settings (or All Settings).
- Find Equipment, Remote, or Remote Setup. (Menu names vary but look for “Remote” or “Equipment”.)
- Choose Program Remote (or Set up remote for TV).
- Pick TV and then pick the brand of the TV from the list.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Usually the box will:
- Ask you to press the Power button on the remote until the TV turns off, or
- Ask you to test Volume Up / Down buttons until the TV volume changes.
- When the TV responds, choose Save / Yes / OK on screen to store the setting.
- Test power, volume and mute. If all work, you’re done.
If the first brand choice doesn’t work, try the same steps and pick a different brand (some TVs use similar codes).
Method B — Manual code entry (if on-screen not available)
(Use if your box has no on-screen “remote setup”.)
- Turn on the TV you want the remote to control.
- Hold the TV button (or Setup) on the remote until the LED lights or blinks.
- Enter the 3- or 4-digit code for your TV brand (find this in the remote manual or on the Cox quick-start).
- Press Power once. If the TV turns off, press Save or Setup to lock the code.
- Test volume and power. If it does not work, try the next code in the list.
Note: Code lists vary by remote model. If you don’t have the code list, use the code-search option below.
Method C — Code search (auto)
(If you have no codes, this finds the right one automatically.)
- Turn on the TV.
- Hold the TV or Setup button until the LED stays on.
- Press the CH+ (or Power) repeatedly — the remote will send different codes one by one.
- When the TV turns off or responds, immediately press OK or Save to store that code.
- Test volume and power to confirm.
Alternative: Use HDMI-CEC (if using HDMI)
If both TV and Mini Box are connected by HDMI, enabling TV’s HDMI-CEC can let the box control TV power/volume without programming the remote.
- On the TV go to Settings → System (or Similar).
- Find HDMI-CEC (brand names: Anynet, Bravia Sync, Simplink, CEC).
- Turn it ON.
- Restart TV and Mini Box and test.
Troubleshooting (quick fixes)
- Remote does nothing — replace batteries and try again.
- Remote controls only box but not TV power/volume — repeat on-screen setup and test different brand codes.
- Remote works intermittently — check line of sight to the box; remove obstacles.
- Programming fails every time — try code search or reset the remote (remove batteries for 30 seconds, press any button to drain). Then retry setup.
- If TV won’t respond to HDMI-CEC — make sure CEC is enabled on both TV and any intermediate HDMI device (soundbars).
- Still stuck — restart both TV and Cox Mini Box (unplug for 30 seconds then plug back in).
Quick recap (super short)
- Turn on TV + Mini Box.
- Use Home → Settings → Remote Setup on the box (recommended).
- Follow on-screen prompts — press Power / Volume until TV responds → Save.
- If no on-screen option, try manual code or code search.
- Try HDMI-CEC as an alternative.
- Replace batteries / re-try setup if it fails.
