Easy steps you can send to a client. Short sentences. Follow steps in order.

Quick checklist (before you start)

Cox mini box (DTA) is powered on and connected to the TV.

  • TV is turned on.
  • Cox remote has fresh batteries.
  • Keep the remote close to the mini box during pairing.

A — Pair the remote with the mini box (RF pairing — aim-free control)

Use this when you want the remote to talk to the mini box without pointing directly at it (RF mode).

  1. Turn on the TV and the Cox mini box.
  2. Hold the Cox remote near the mini box.
  3. Press the COX MENU button on the remote.
  4. On the TV screen go to Customer Support → Remote Control Pairing (follow the on-screen prompts).
  5. Wait until the on-screen message shows pairing is complete.
  6. Test the remote by changing channels on the mini box.

(If your remote or mini box shows different menu names, look for “Remote Pairing” or “Remote Control Pairing” under Customer Support or Settings.) CoxRoger Williams University

B — Program the remote to control TV power and volume (IR programming)

Most clients want the remote to turn the TV on/off and control TV volume. This is an IR setup (the remote sends TV codes).

Method 1 — Enter the TV code (direct code entry)

  1. Turn on the TV you want to control.
  2. Press and hold SETUP (or MUTE + SELECT on some models) until the TV key blinks twice.
  3. Press the TV device key (or the device key shown).
  4. Enter the 3- or 4-digit code for your TV brand (codes are in the remote guide or on remotes.cox.com).
  5. Point the remote at the TV and press Power to test. If the TV turns off, the code is saved.
  6. If it does not work, try the next code for your brand. CoxCableTV.com

Method 2 — Auto code search (no code list needed)

  1. Turn the TV on.
  2. Press and hold SETUP until the device key blinks twice.
  3. Press the TV key.
  4. Press Play (or the button your remote guide says) to start the search. The remote will cycle codes.
  5. Each time the TV turns off, press Stop to save that code.
  6. Test volume and power. If some functions do not work, repeat and let it search further. CableTV.com

C — If you have a Contour/voice remote (pair/unpair tips)

Some Cox Contour remotes (aim-free voice remotes) use different steps. For those, one method is: press and hold specific buttons to enter pairing mode, then follow on-screen prompts. For example, some Contour remotes use the A + D button sequence then a numeric code to pair/unpair. If you have a voice remote, use the Cox pairing help page or the Contour remote guide for exact steps. Cox+1

Troubleshooting (quick fixes)

  • Replace remote batteries and try again.
  • Point the remote directly at the TV when programming TV power/volume.
  • If pairing with the mini box fails, remove batteries for 30 seconds and retry.
  • Make sure the remote is set to the correct mode (RF vs IR) as shown in the remote manual — RF mode only controls the paired box without line of sight; for TV control you usually need IR mode or TV code programming.
  • If nothing works, look up your remote model guide at remotes.cox.com or call Cox support. Cox+1JustAnswer
