How to Program a Cox Remote to a TV / Mini Box

Quick checklist (before you start)

  • Cox mini box and TV are powered on.
  • Remote has fresh batteries.
  • Keep the remote close to the mini box while pairing.
  • Have the TV brand name ready (for TV codes) or keep the TV on for auto-search.

Part A — Pair the Cox remote to the Mini Box (RF / aim-free control)

  1. Turn on the TV and the Cox mini box.
  2. Place the remote near the mini box (within 1–2 feet).
  3. Press the Menu or Home button on the remote.
  4. Use the on-screen menu to go to Settings → Customer Support → Remote Control Pairing (or look for “Remote Pairing”).
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions and press the button shown when asked.
  6. Wait until the screen confirms pairing is complete.
  7. Test the remote by changing channels on the mini box. If it works, RF pairing is done.

If you do not find the pairing menu, try removing the remote batteries for 10 seconds, reinsert them, and open the menu again.

Part B — Program the remote to control TV power and volume (IR programming)

Method 1 — Enter TV brand code (recommended if you have the code)

  1. Turn the TV on.
  2. Press and hold the SETUP button on the remote until a light blinks twice. (If there is no SETUP button, follow the remote’s guide to enter programming mode.)
  3. Press the TV device button.
  4. Enter the 3- or 4-digit code for your TV brand (codes are in the remote guide or at remotes.cox.com).
  5. Point the remote at the TV and press Power. If the TV turns off, the code saved.
  6. Test Volume and Power. If some functions don’t work, try the next code for your brand.

Method 2 — Auto code search (no code list needed)

  1. Turn the TV on.
  2. Press and hold SETUP until the light blinks twice.
  3. Press the TV key.
  4. Press the Power or Play/Search button that starts the automatic search (follow what your remote guide says).
  5. The remote will send codes one by one. When the TV turns off, press OK/Select or Stop to save that code.
  6. Test the volume and power. If volume does not work, repeat the auto search until you find a code that controls volume and power.

Part C — If you have a Contour or Voice remote

  • Voice/Contour remotes use slightly different steps.
  • If pairing does not work, follow the on-screen prompts or check remotes.cox.com for model-specific instructions.
  • If you want, tell me the remote model and TV brand and I can give exact steps.

Troubleshooting (quick fixes)

  • Replace the remote batteries and try again.
  • Stand within 3 feet when pairing.
  • Remove obstructions between remote and TV for IR programming.
  • Reboot the mini box: unplug power for 10 seconds, plug back in, then retry pairing.
  • If the remote still does not control TV power/volume after many tries, try a different code or use the auto search again.
  • If nothing works, contact Cox support or check remotes.cox.com for your remote model guide.
